AN EXCESS OF THIS VITAMIN INCREASES BREAST CANCER

24 Nov

A recent published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that high intake of folate and other one-carbon metabolism related nutrients could potentially increase the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Folate is a vitamin that is often added to flours to help prevent birth defects.  This current study led by Victoria L Stevens and colleagues from the Epidemiology Research American Cancer Society Atlanta Georgia shows high intake of folate was associated with significantly increased risk of breast cancer.

In this study, Stevens et al. examined the association of dietary and total folate, vitaminB6, vitamin B12, methionine and alcohol intakes with breast cancer risk in 70,656 postmenopausal women  whose dietary information was collected at baseline in 1992. During the follow-up between 1992 and June 2005, 3,898 women developed breast cancer.

Researchers found postmenopausal women with the highest quintile of dietary folate intake was correlated with a 12 percent increased risk of breast cancer. The elevated risk was not modified by other nutrients or alcohol. But no dose-response trend was observed. The other vitamins were not found to be associated with breast cancer risk and methione was inversely related to breast cancer risk. Foods high in methionine include eggs, cheese, seaweed, seeds, nuts, fish, mollusks, soy protein, and butter. Methionine helps the body to detoxify toxins through the liver. It acts to bind or methylate toxins and such and releases them from the body. The researchers did not know why high dietary folate was linked with high breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women.  All the folate-rich foods listed seem to be healthy foods or supplements. It could be the folate that is added to foods that is the problem but not the one’s that they are naturally found in. Researchers do not know, however, naturally high folate containing foods are very healthy. They acknowledged that more research is needed.

Hemorrhoids

08 Nov

Hemorrhoids is one of the commonly affected condition in younger and older age groups, also called piles, are swollen and inflamed veins in anus and lower rectum resulting from straining during a bowel movement or from the increased pressure on these veins which most of the times can be relieved from symptoms using home treatments and lifestyle changes.

Causes:

  • Increased Straining during bowel movements such as constipation or Diarrhea
  • Sitting for long periods of time on the toilet
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
  • Obesity, Portal Hypertension and chronic liver disease
  • Pregnancy and premenstrual syndrome causing water retention and constipation
  • Anal intercourse
  • Cigarettes smoking
  • Long distances of travel

Symptoms:

  • Painless bleeding with bright red colour and the bleeding usually does not last long.
  • Hemorrhoids may lead to a condition called prolapsed hemorrhoids.
  • This occurs when the internal hemorrhoids swell and then extend through the anus which can be felt at anus from outside and can be pushed back manually
  • Itching also called pruritis ani or irritation
  • External hemorrhoids may form a painful condition called thrombosed hemorrhoids.
  • When a blood clot occurs in a hemorrhoid, the hemorrhoid will become even more swollen. This swelling leads to increase pain which becomes even worse with bowel movements or sometimes with sitting
  • Leakage of fecal matter without sense
  • Food material such as spicy food and low fibre diet food

Tests and Diagnosis:

  • Digital examination through fingers
  • Using a anoscope the rectal area can be seen
  • Sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy can be done in case of detailed study

Treatment and prevention:

  • Topical application of natural astringents and soothing agents, such as Witch hazel or Cranesbills, honey
  • Eating food rich in fiber bulking agents
  • Using the squatting position for bowel movements like in western toilets
  • Sleeping in night with raised legs helps reduce or completely eliminate especially external hemorrhoids.
  • Placing an ice pack to an external hemorrhoid should relieve itching and swelling. Leave the ice pack on the hemorrhoid for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Using sitz bath along with astringents can be useful
  • Homeopathy is best for Non Invasive treatment

Surgeries or medical procedures:

  • Hemorrhoidectomy

Nasal polyp

06 Nov

Nasal polyps are small, sac-like growths made up of inflamed tissue lining the nose.

Causes:

Nasal polyps start near the Ethmoid sinuses (located at the top of the inside of the nose) and grow into the open areas. Large polyps may block the airway.

Having any of the following conditions may make people more likely to get nasal polyps:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)

Signs & Symptoms:

A person suffering from nasal polyps may feel difficulty in breathing; there is constant dripping from the nose and loss of one’s sense of smell.

  • Mouth breathing
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Runny nose
  • Sound congested

Diagnosis:

The doctor examines the patient’s nasal passages. A computerized tomography (CT) scan will be done to help determine the size and exact location of the polyps, including any polyps in the sinuses.

Acne

04 Sep

Definition:
Acne or pimples is a common skin condition frequently seen in young individuals during teenage and youth years. This occurs mainly due to the action of hormones on the oil glands in the skin. The draining ducts of the oil glands get blocked and hence they are not able to drain the oil secretion. The oil and cells inside the blocked gland form a perfect environment for the growth of Propionibacterium acnes (the organism responsible for acne). Thus, it results in the formation of pimples or acne.

Acne usually occurs on the face, chest, back, shoulders and neck. It is one of the most common skin conditions. Although acne is not a serious threat to the health, yet it can lead to scarring and disfigurement of the face that can have a significant impact on the patient.

Acne may present itself in various forms and these are as follows:

Characteristics :

  • Whiteheads and blackheads (Comedones): White or black tiny bumps on the skin which are nothing but the enlarged and plugged hair follicles
  • Papules: Inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch
  • Pustules (pimples): Pus-filled lesions that may be red at the base
  • Nodules: Large, painful, solid lesions that are lodged deep within the skin
  • lesions that can cause scarring

Following are the commonly recognized types of Acne:

  • Acne vulgaris
  • Acne rosacea
  • Acne conglobata
  • Acne cosmetica
  • Acne fulminans
  • Acne medicamentosa
  • Acne keloidalis nuchae

Causes of Acne:
One of the most important causes is the increase in the male hormones (androgens) that occurs in boys as well as girls during puberty. These hormones cause an increased production of sebum (oil) and hence result in acne.
Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or such changes caused by starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne. Another factor is heredity or genetics; there is evidence to support the fact that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. Apart from this certain drugs, including androgens and lithium, are also known to cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may cause further plugging of the follicles in the skin and hence can precipitate the onset of acne.
Majority of people who develop acne are between the ages of 12 and 25. For most people, acne tends to go away by the time they reach their thirties; however, some people in their forties and fifties continue to have this skin problem.

Homeopathic treatment:
Homeopathic treatment for Acne is strongly suggested. It helps in the following ways:

  • Controls the tendency to have acne (often genetic, in severe cases)
  • Addresses underlying hormonal disturbance which gives one a proneness to have acne
  • Reduces excessive  oiliness of skin
  • Reduces acne directly
  • Controls infection
  • Controls scar formation
  • Reduces hyperpignementation following acne
  • Controls tendency to scar formation following acne

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT –

Sulphur

Is perhaps the remedy most often indicated in this affection, especially if chronic. The skin is rough and hard and the acne is associated with comedones and constipation; great aggravation from water is the characteristic leading to Sulphur in skin affections. Face is Pale, sickly color. Heat and spotted redness of face. Black pores. Itching intensely in evening and from warmth. The acne punctata is the variety corresponding most nearly to Sulphur. Simple forms yield to Belladonna or Pulsatilla. Acne rosacea yields to Arsenicum iodatum or Sulphur iodide.

Sanguinaria

It is another useful remedy in acne, especially in women with scanty menses and irregular circulation of blood. Other remedies for acne dependent on sexual disturbances of women are Calcarea carbonica and Aurum muriaticum natronatrum.

Kali bromatum

Acne on the face, neck and shoulders. We frequently find acne in Epileptics who have been maltreated by bromides. This remedy is especially adapted to the acne simplex and the acne indurata, especially in hyperaesthetic, nervous females. Face flushed. Acne of face, pustules. General failure of mental power, loss of memory, melancholia, anesthesia of the mucous membranes. Suicidal mania with tremulousness. Itching of skin worse on chest, shoulders, and face. Anesthesia of skin. This remedy may be given if Asterias Rubens fails. Dr. J.H.Clarke says, “I know of no remedy of such universal usefulness in cases of simple acne as Kali bromatum 30,” and the late Dr.A.M. Cushing recommended Arsenicum bromatum 4x as very efficacious.Thuja is one of our best remedies for acne facialis. Calcarea picrata is also a useful remedy for acne; clinically it has been found one of the good remedies. Calcarea sulphurica is indicated where the pimples suppurate.

Antimonium crudum

Small red pimples on face, acne in drunkards with gastric derangements, thirst and white-coated tongue. Face with sad expression Fat, fretful, cross and peevish; cries if looked at, touched or washed. Ecstatic, dreamy, sentimental. Pustules.

Fissure in ano

01 Sep

Symptoms

1. Pain while passing stools : The lower anal canal is exquisitely sensitive area of skin and can produce fairly significant signals of pain if damaged. Sharp agonizing knife-like pain starts when the individual passes stool. The pain is severe and persists for an hour or so. It ceases suddenly. The sufferer is comfortable until the next action of bowel. The individual tends to be constipated rather than go through painful ordeal. If a fissure becomes chronic (long-standing) and deep, another kind of pain can develop. It is a dull ache in the anus and pelvis that starts a few minutes after the bowel movement and can persist for hours after passing stools. This chronic fissure pain is due to spasm of the internal sphincter muscle (one of the small muscles in the anus) and can be quite debilitating.

2. Severe spasm of the anal sphincter (as a protective reflex)

3.Blood streaked stool (typically on the side of the hard stool) : It is important to note that the bleeding associated with a fissure-in-ano is bright red and associated with some pain or tenderness in the anus. Dark bleeding of greater amount without any anal tenderness or pain should never be ignored and should be brought to the notice of doctor.

4. Discharge, swelling, and itching occur especially with chronic fissures

Interestingly, homeopathy has many medicines to relieve the discomfort. Rightly chosen homeopathic medicine covers various aspects of fissure.

Types of Fissure-in-ano

Fissure-in-ano may present as acute fissure of recent origin (less than 6 weeks of duration). At this stage fissures are superficial. Some of them may deepen to reach underlying layers and present as chronic fissure of a long duration (more than 6 weeks of duration) or recurring fissures.

Fissure-in-ano is largely considered as a medico surgical disorder. However, looking at it in the light of homeopathic medicine, it is medically correctible conditions. Fortunately, in most cases, surgery can be avoided with homeopathy treatment.
